When did you start writing How (Not) to Fall in Love?
I started it in 2008 during the recession, because watching that occur brought up all the memories of my family’s experiences that started in 2002, as we lived the consequences of the “dot com” crash. This book went through many, many revisions, more than any other book I’ve written before or since. When I think back to some of the early drafts, I’m amazed how much the book changed.
I think it took so long because I drew on so much personal experience, but I had to be sure I made this Darcy’s story, not mine. Writing it was cathartic, painful, and wonderful all at once.
